Maltese Cross Pendant

Introduced by the Knights of St. John in 1530, the Maltese Cross is a cherished symbol of Malta. Originally worn by chivalric warriors, the cross features eight points representing the eight “langues” of the Knights: Auvergne, Provence, France, Aragon, Castille and Portugal, Italy, Bavaria, and England. These points now symbolize eight virtues: Observant, Tactful, Resourceful, Dextrous, Explicit, Discriminating, Persevering, and Sympathetic. Today, the Maltese Cross is a symbol of protection and a prominent feature in Maltese architecture and crafts, particularly in filigree jewelry. Filigree, a delicate craft involving the twisting of fine silver or gold wires, creates intricate lace-like patterns. This tradition, dating back to Phoenician times, has been refined by local artisans, making the Maltese Cross a sought-after design in various jewellery pieces such as pendants, bracelets, earrings, and rings, embodying Maltese heritage.
